Interferons are a family of proteins and glycoproteins that influence how the immune system responds to events such as viral infection or tumors.
Interferon beta is produced in response to viral infections and other biological inducers and elicits its effects by interacting with specific receptors on the surface of cells. The interaction initiates a cascade of actions including stimulation of numerous genes within the cell which assist the immune response by inhibiting viral replication within other cells of the body. Interferon beta-1b is a recombinant protein produced in bacterial cells and is used to treat patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.
